EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY: The Archdiocese of St Andrews & Edinburgh are looking for a Cemetery Operative to join a small team based at Mount Vernon Cemetery in Edinburgh. 

This role would suit a conscientious individual with the skills to operate grave digging and grounds maintenance machinery. Specific training will be available as necessary.

The role holder will need good communication skills and be polite and respectful at all times with a commitment to providing the highest level of service. The role holder must also be able to demonstrate an ability to read plans and interpret instructions accurately in order to locate, mark and dig graves.

The work is physically demanding and will involve the preparation and backfilling of graves to the correct specification. It is also essential that the role holder has a commitment to ensuring that all matters in regards to Health & Safety are applied within the team.

Job Title: Cemetery Operative

Location: Mount Vernon Cemetery, 49 Mount Vernon Rd, Edinburgh EH16 6JG

Hours: 37.5hrs per week

Salary: £17,102 per year

Reports to: Manager of Mount Vernon Cemetery


Key relationships:

•          Manager of Mount Vernon Cemetery

•          Other Cemetery Operatives

•          Undertakers

•          Stonemasons

•          Members of the public visiting the cemetery


Key responsibilities:

To work as part of a small team, and at times independently, to ensure that all work is carried out to agreed standards and targets and adapting to changing priorities and deadlines.

Your main duties will be to carry out all necessary tasks relating to the operations of the cemetery having regard to the sensitivity of the service and will include:

•          Grave digging and backfilling using appropriate machinery

•          Assisting at funerals (coffin bearer optional)

•          Grass cutting & strimming

•          Maintaining lair dressing area

•          Maintaining plant, machinery and property

•          Maintaining ground levels

•          Reporting on dangerous headstones

•          General maintenance duties

•          Assisting customers with enquiries, checking with the main department at the Archdiocesan Office based at 100 Strathearn Road, Edinburgh, to ensure any information given is accurate and in a sympathetic manner

•          Working independently and as part of a team to ensure that all work is carried out to agreed standards and targets and adapting to changing priorities and deadlines

•          Recording all data relating to graves in an accurate and timely fashion

•          Ensuring that a positive image is maintained

•          Reporting inappropriate or illegal behaviour in the cemetery

•          Undertaking any other duties as are assigned to you by your line manager
